You want to know the secret of Buy Less, Choose Well, Make it Last? The famous quote from Vivienne Westwood…

It’s that old fashioned virtue that I named my business after: Prudence!

Meaning, when you are shopping, keep in mind what you already own and resolve to make a wise fashion purchase that will reward you now and for years to come. Narrow down your options and disregard anything outside your Personal Style Zone (more about this in another post).

I think we’re moving into an era now where it’s actually more cool to have a signature look which doesn’t deviate wildly from season to season, than to spend madly keeping up with trends or celebrities. Here’s something to try - start a list of things you WON’T wear - this can be the start of really getting to know your personal style.

As for me, I have quite a list of things I won’t wear. A few main ones are:

  • pendants (makes me feel like an old lady, even though I like them on other people)

  • watches (accentuates my skinny and bony wrists)

  • shorts (white legs)

  • tight fitting tops or dresses (uncomfortable)

  • clingy fabrics (uncomfortable, need to have exactly the right underwear)

  • stilettos or any other high heel (can’t walk)

  • very bright colours (I feel overwhelmed)

  • plain black next to my face (makes me look tired)

I could go on!

I’ve met ladies who feel sad that they can’t wear the latest off the shoulder top or whatever is being pushed as the must have item of the season and I say don’t worry, it’s just not your thing and this trend will be over before you know it. Let’s concentrate on sourcing a top that will be flattering, stylish and long lasting instead. And bonus - we save one more off the shoulder top from being bought, worn a few times and discarded. I know, at first it doesn’t seem to be as much fun. Fashion is meant to be fun and expressive. It still can be, but what I’m suggesting is that instead of the immediate high of a quick purchase to solve a problem, shopping can turn into something more of a discriminating art, than an adrenaline high.

So this is what I mean by Prudence - really understand yourself, your needs, your budget and what you’re looking for before you hit the (real or online) stores and only buy something if it meets your exacting criteria. Otherwise don’t spend your hard earned cash!

Now, it can be challenging to do this mindset shift all by yourself. It’s a bit like going on a gluten free diet all of a sudden! There’s a lot to think about and some planning involved. But the basic idea is to think long term whenever you add something to your wardrobe. And if you live in the Melbourne area and would like my help, please reach out!
