I frickin’ love boots. Little coloured ones with medium heels are my favourite and I’m lucky enough to own a few pairs by Preston Zly.

About ten to fifteen years ago, a time when I had more disposable income, I went through a phase of buying a pair of Preston Zly boots every winter, The thing about this brand is that it’s quirky and indie, so it’s never really quite in fashion which is what makes it cool - if you know what I mean. I am so glad I invested in these boots when I had the spare money to do so - any time I trot out my bright yellow Gaucho’s or my pointy, red, 80’s inspired Virginia’s, I feel better dressed straight away. And this feeling has lasted for years - a Prudent fashion choice for sure.

As for my best ever boot purchase, in terms of cost per wear, it has to be my wedge booties. Who remembers Fat, that cool shop run by four fashion mavens, that started on Johnston Street Fitzroy and then relocated to Bruswick Street, Melbourne CBD and beyond. Those ladies had their finger on the independent fashion pulse and I loved wandering around their stores. That’s where I found a perfect pair of sandy-cement coloured wedge boots by Maison Margiela. Magically, they seemed to go with everything and I found myself wishing I had a black pair too. Lo and behold, one day when I was wandering along Gertrude Street Fitzroy I saw a second hand black pair in the window of Bruce - a most excellent consignment shop that I love to poke around in.

Between the original cement pair and the black pair, I have worn these shoes virtually every week for the past decade. And they still seem to go with everything - it’s some kind of magic.

I think this is a good case study for the Prudence style philosophy. Yes, all of these boots were expensive. But at that time, they were within my budget and now, a decade later, I don’t need to worry about buying new shoes for a while because I’m already sorted. It’s like I bought my future self a present.

What will you buy for your future self? Hopefully, something nice, long lasting and good quality!

cheers, Ann
